: Hi, I am a 4th year electrical engineering student and I am about to start
: my senior design project which is to build a low power Tesla Coil using
: modern RF electronic techniques to attempt to improve the overall
: performance of the Tesla Coil and modulate the input to the coil with an
: electronic instrument to use the plasma as a speaker. I am finding alot of
: good resources online concerning high power tesla coils but unfortunately
: my design has to be 10 Watts or less. I was wondering if someone could
: give me a push in the right direction as to where to start with such a low
: power design.

Hi,
Sounds like a challenging project! Unfortunately, most of my experience is with high power spark gap and transmitting tube type coils, but I'll try to provide some suggestions.
It should be possible to use a similar design approach as those used in higher power solid state systems, but you'll need to scale output power downwards. Although a Dual Resonant SSTC (DRSSTC) could be used, for better audio fidelity and power efficiency, you may be interested in using a Pulse Width Modulated Class D or Class E architecture. Some good discussions of solid state and class E coils can be found on Richie Burnett's site:

Please let us know what you're design looks like, good luck and best wishes!
