Ruben, I'd recommend making your first Tesla Coil with the ignition coil(s) instead of the microwave oven transformer (MOT) - MOT's are extremely dangerous, and you probably need to get some high voltage experience before trying to use them as a first time project. You can drive an ignition coil with a transistor driver (similar to many flyback driver circuits), off the power mains through an SCR/TRIAC lamp dimmer in series with a 2-4 uF film capacitor. You can also use a set of vibrating contacts (but parallel the contacts with a small 0.1 - 0.5 uF film capacitor) and run the coil from a low voltage DC source similar to way it was done for old induction coils. A high performance (Accell, HEI, or similar) coil can easily deliver 150-200 watts of high voltage for short run times. Some of the following approaches can be used to drive more than one ignition coil at a time if you really want to live dangerously... :^) Following are a few ideas for various types of ignition coil drivers - enjoy: Good luck, and play safely! -- Bert --
: I am contemplating building my first tesla coil and was planning on
: building a small coil, hopefully something that can put out about 15 cm
: streamers. unfortunatley im on a tight budget and have no NST. I do have
: 2 high power car ignition coils though. Does anyone have any ideas on a
: suitible driver for a tesla coil that could be made with 2 car ignition
: coils, and would i be able to get that sort of output from such a set
: up. i also have an old microwave that could be cannabalised, but i dont
: want to be biting off more than i can chew, unless anyone has some ideas
: on precise current limition on a MOT.
: Any help or advise on my projectw will be apreciate
