Army Group “A” and “B” were at the end of a very long supply line, which at the time of the street and factory fighting in Stalingrad (Sept. - Nov. 1942) only had one rail line serving their sector, which cause major problems in the German artillery units.
Many of the Soviet units were crossing the Volga at night and the German intervention was minimal at best.
I would recommended reading the book “Stopped at Stalingrad: The Luftwaffe and Hitler's Defeat in the East, 1942-1943” by Hayward, it gives a great insight the the problems facing the German forces in the fall of 1942.
