Now to the real reason for my post. I am an amateur board gamer who enjoys making game maps for players of Axis & Allies: Miniatures. I won a map designing contest for my map of Betio Island better known to history as the invasion of Tarawa in the central Pacific ocean. Here is a link in case you are curious. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/aam/ah20070131c http://boards.avalonhill.com/showthread.php?t=22015 http://aascenarios.blogspot.com/2007/07/eastern-betio-maps.html For my next project I decided to create a map for the battle of Stalingrad. I've been reading books and searching the internet for information. The scale I'm working with is at the platoon / company level, so I'm only going to depict a small part of the battle. There are several game designers who have produced designs depicting either the entire Stalingrad campaign, the entire city with outlying areas or focused in on the battle for the factories. I don't want to repeat what others have done, so I've decided to focus on the fighting that took place for downtown Stalingrad. After some research I decided to narrow my project to the area of downtown Stalingrad between the Tsaritsa gully to the Krutoy gully. From these boundaries I would start at the edge of the Volga river bank and go in about 1500 meters which would put you just beyond the north-south railroad which runs through the city. So here is my problem: I'm trying to find maps of this section of downtown Stalingrad from the time of the battle. I have come across several on the internet that show parts of this area. I've also found some in books that are helpful such as the book; "Stalingrad, How the Red Army Triumphed" which has a good map of the downtown area. I've also looked at Goggle Earth which shows me modern day Volgograd, but I'm unsure how much of the street layout has changed since the battle occurred. I see that this site has some aerial maps from the time of the battle. Is there anyway I could get a copy of these? Is there some place where they are available for purchase? Any help that could be offered would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
