On the English language alone----I would say 'forget it' unless you have made arrangements to meet an interpreter-guide before hand, as I did. You will get SO MUCH MORE out of a guided tour by someone who knows his stuff and has a car, like Evgeny Kulichenko. A very personable guy who showed me all I wanted to see and was very helpful in all respects. During my 5 day visit I only came across one young guy who wanted to speak English, mainly to impress his girlfriend with his ability to speak his schoolboy language. In all other cases it was a matter of finger pointing and pidgin Russian with grunts and smiles etc etc. In Moscow and St P it is easy, but Volgograd is NOT either of these very modern cities, not to take any thing away from it, but it is very far away from Moscow.
