One of the things that strikes me about the factory district in Volgograd, from looking at the satellite picture at google is the nearly complete lack of any parking lots! Public transit must be very popular there.... Speaking of google's satellite picture, if you zoom in on Lyudnikov's Island, you can see that they've built what appears to be a duplication of the Kommissarhaus (haus 60, the "p-shaped building"), located a little bit to the northeast of the original. Jason Mark has some pictures of the remnant of the original Kommissarhaus in his new book. He says it was demolished in 2003, against the protests of veteran's groups. Also that during the demolition they found a tunnel between the basement of the house and the Barrikady factory, and that inside the tunnel there were weapons and the remains of Red Army men who had been wounded and presumably were sheltering there and somehow got sealed in. Absolutely amazing...
