However- how often woudl the German military need to identify men to be airlifted out of an area? Of not often then why stamp out metal disks which is time consuing and costs raw materials? Then fly them into the pocket. It doesn't really make sense. I had always thought they were indicators of an airfield: like small signposts to show the way there. Or possible some sort of re-usable telephone line tag- when painted up the line number could be written on it. I would suggest asking some Luft vets (from any theater) what they are.
