Here's a paragraph from Joachim Weider's book (_Stalingrad: Memories and Reassessments_), as he and others listened to the speech from a bunker in Stalingrad north: "During this speech, full of empty phrases and lies that outdid itself in
hysterical glorifications and praises, the demeanor of the deeply disillusioned
and incensed audience became more and more hostile. The glances, gestures and
words all around unmistakably showed the rage that was growing in people's
souls. Whoever might still have trusted in the promise of help from outside now
had to recognize with growing horror that at home, where relatives still hoped
for a reunion, the warriors of Stalingrad had been finally written off, We all
felt that we had hear our funeral oration before its time."
