The Grain elevator is the hardest site to get permission to go into. I have tried actively for 5 years to get to the top floor and take pictures from the defending Soviet soldier’s perspective during the battle. Actually, this last trip was the nearest I ever came to getting into it. I had permission but they said I needing some kind of safety training to go to the top. I stated in my request I wanted to go to the top floor not the top of the building but somewhere it got lost in the translation. FUBAR! They told me I would have to try on a later date. Next time I am going with a 3D drawing and an arrow pointing to where I want to go. There are hundreds of buildings throughout the city that survived, well the foundations and first floors. Just a short walk in almost any part of the city and you will find commemorative plaques on buildings and street corners. They say things like “This building was the HQ of such and such unit during the battle of Stalingrad.” Russ
