My grandfather fought there for the Germans. He told my mother that he was flown out three days before the last flight left the kessel. He went on to fight in France before being sent to Italy, where he was eventually captured by Allied forces. It should be noted that he said that Allied soliders looked the other way when the prisoners, who were used to unload transport ships, stole food. The Germans trapped in Italy had been low on food. Interesting enough. I am only sorry he passed away before we could talk more. He didn't like talking about the war.
