Please do not place messages about killing a snake, and asking what kind it is you have killed! That is like going onto a message board about dogs and telling about torturing one to death, and asking what kind of breed it was. You will likely get "flamed", and likely by the forum owner, depending on his mood that day.
A note about head shape in snakes: Head shape is a totally useless character for identifying a snake, and has nothing to do with whether the serpent is or is not venomous (poisonous). Many harmless snakes, especially when young, have rather large heads. Please describe color, pattern, markings, and habitat where the snake was found. The shape of the head will not help us in any way. Thank you. Please post comments on THIS ARTICLE ONLY! To ask a question go here: Home

: Good pictures. It looks like a racer
: skin. They are nonvenomous and harmless
: and do eat rodents.

: I will ask hubby to take the photo.
: When
: I say I am frightened I mean petrified.
: I have not been in the barn in over a
: week and the walkway at the back of the
: house for two weeks. I said King rat
: because the Missouri Site on snakes
: called the one that looked the closest
: a King Rat Snake. Any snake that is as
: long as I am tall can be called king in
: my book. Will facebook work?

: Well, it soes indeed sound, as Wayne
: says, like Rat Snakes or possibly
: Racers. No such thing as King Rat
: snake...
: A good way to assure yourself that it
: is harmless is to get close to the skin
: (the skin, even of a venomous snake, is
: harmless) and check the scales on the
: tail. If there is a row of two scales
: on the underside of the tail, it is
: certainly harmless. Get a good photo of
: the underside of the tail on one of the
: skins, or better yet, all of them, and
: post it on Flickr or another site that
: has photo sharing, and send us a link
: here. Wayne or I can take a look at it.

: So how do I load a photo of this snake
: skin. I braved getting within a foot
: of the skin to take the photo. As it
: turns out it was a small skin compared
: to the two skins I discovered the next
: day. One was 18 inches long, one was
: two feet long, and the one in our barn
: was 5 feet 2 inches long. I would feel
: better about these finds if I could say
: to myself...oh its only a king rat
: snake...it won't kill me.

: Sounds like a Black Rat Snake or a
: Racer.

: Both are rat eaters as it turns out
: :-).

: I am currently trying to figure out
: what
: type of snake is living in our home
: area. I admit to being terrified of
: snakes and I am trying to be snake
: friendly and learn about them. I live
: in Richmond, Missouri and yesterday I
: found a big, snake skin curled around
: one of our tiger lilies. I have a
: photo but am not sure how to post it.
: It is grayish black with a tan
: underskin. Of course it is very
: stretched. I am hoping for some sort of
: rat eater.
