I had a bilateral mastectomy with immediate placement of tissue expanders. The expanders had to be removed due to infection. I am now in-between surgeries. I am pondering DIEP flap, but I am wondering what my options are if I choose no reconstruction. I do not want implants. I was fairly large-chested before my mastectomy.
Since the expanders were removed, what's left of my breast tissue/skin is just "hanging". This gives me a "deflated football" look. My surgeon suggested that partial external prostheses or shapers could be fitted in a mastectomy bra over the hanging tissue.
Is it safe to leave the breast tissue hanging for the rest of my life and wear a prosthetic shaper over it, or will the skin eventually scar down and cause adhesions to the chest muscle? Also, could some of this tissue be left and just the excess skin in my axilla area be removed/contoured? Or should I have it all removed to achieve a flat scar before being fitted for a prosthesis?
Thanks for taking the time to answer. Have a great day!
