I had a bilateral mastectomy with immediate placement of expanders. Surgery was curative of my DCIS and I didn't need chemo or raditation. I was planning on having DIEP flap, but didn't make it to the surgery date. Five months post mastectomy, while I was awaiting DIEP flap surgery, I developed fevers and massive swelling in my chest. I had to have the expanders removed. I have many allergies (some of them life threatening), and I was told the expander on the swollen side had "flipped" in its pocket and an acute inflammatory reaction had occurred. The surgeon drained 900cc of fluid around the expander. The path report also showed SA infection, but the surgeon felt that was from contamination, rather than true infection. Because of these complications and fear of developing any more, I have decided I don't want any more reconstruction, but the excess skin that was left behind does need to be removed. I'm told I need to wait 3-6 months before this can be done, so that things "settle down." Is this time frame a standard recommendation, or can skin removal and cosmetic scar revision surgery take place sooner? Thanks.
