it's not the player's fault the manager has thrown him in at the deep end. Whilst I think he handled it pretty well overall, Anderson and Rice as a midfield duo is indeed short on spark. Neither really has the ability to dictate the tempo of a game. For most of the tournament they were doing little more than breaking up play and getting the ball to the more attack-minded players, which was good enough to get the job done against DR Congo, Mexico and Norway - just about - but the risk was always that they would come unstuck against one of the top teams. And the over inflated amount for what is a very limited player who I agree with Graeme Souness doesn’t have enough football in him and was found out at elite international level hitting 5 years passes doesn’t cut it at that level.
I could add Declan Rice to that who for all his attributes including great engine and attitude also doesn’t have enough football in him.
Only the. You can have players who can cut it at elite international level that play for the likes of Spain and Argentina just look at Rodri that’s what a top footballer looks like.
