According to Boyland on his podcast, last year they agreed 12mil + 4m add-ons, so we (and others) expect it to be reduced somewhat, given he is now in the last year of his deal, whereas Boro 'value him as a 20mil player'.
If I was the manager, and he was the first one I wanted through the door this year, I think I'd be telling my paymasters not to miss out for the sake of two million quid, and just reduce my overall budget.

General assumption seems to be that we are penny pinching, dithering, and as soon as another team outbids us we'll lose out.
It's happened before, but not under TFG. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and am at least open minded to the possibility that:
- We are confident that the player wants to come here
- We aren't going to waste a few million that we don't have to
- There's a deal to be done but takes a bit of time to sort
