He's 26 and has significant premier league experience, which makes him a valuable commodity and a potential target for many clubs around the world. At the worst, with a longer contract now signed, Everton can hope to negotiate a good fee if there is a sale over the next 18 months.
Signing a three year deal doesnt mean he will be a first choice at Everton for all of that period.
On the pitch he is a solid defender, not too slow and good at one-on-ones. He also appears to be a team player and his team mates appear to be comfortable with him. He could certainly develop his forward play but I suspect that has been prioritised over the difficult seasons we have had and not helped by having different players in front of him on a regular basis.
Not a lot to complain about, you wouldn't have thought.
