We had a brilliant time. We did the Blue Lagoon (obvs), various waterfalls, the OG (original Geysir), the Katla ice cave, pony riding and hiked up to a geothermal river for a swim. Our girls loved it.

The first night we stayed in a place called Grindavik near the Blue Lagoon. I hadn't done my research and soon discovered that it had been the scene of a massive volcanic eruption in 2023 and was now largely deserted with loads of condemned houses and fissures all over the place! Until 2023, it had a population of 4,000 and now less than 100 remain! The outskirts were like Mordor with black lava everywhere and the town was like 28 Days Later. Very surreal.
