What is some councillor going to do to convince Netanyahu and Hamas to chill the fuck out. Answer, nothing.
Its posturing politics to get people elected into well paid jobs.
In town, on an almost monthly basis last year on parliament street there were a group of people maybe 15-20 of them, standing at the lights with
'honk for Palestine'
signs
almost all of them were middle aged or older white folk, just getting in the fucking way. Oh look I honked for palestine, well thats solved that 100 year (or 2500year if you prefer) dispute. Lets honk to end starvation in Africa, next.
Flip things round, do you think Elections in... I dunno, lets say Japan, should have been influenced in the 80s or 90s by the troubles in Ireland ?
I'm not having a pop btw, it just boils my piss how we are all being played.
As I said, whats happened and is happening is horrible. But it shouldnt permeate our local politics to the level is has.
I'd rather our council elections, when they come, focussed for example on the rising homelessness in Liverpool , coupled with the rise in poverty (anyone who hasnt been for 10-20 years would be shocked walking through town).
Thats not to say it the middle east cant be a concern. But honestly, there are a dozen plus things ahead of it. Plus its so fucking divisive. This isnt like 'end homelessness' or 'end domestic violence' or 'save the nhs' where fundamentally the vast majority agree. The middle is a contentious issue, and it divides people.
We are being pushed into a path by the media and both sides, to divide ourselves based on our views on something most know little about.
Ultimately I doubt the 8yr old in Gaza who has lost both parents and had their arm blown off, really gives much of a fuck if people 'honk for Palestine' or what some UK grifter did or didnt say in the local elections to get their 5 years on a nice council salary.

seeing the death and destruction Israel have caused...and thinking it was probably on the rest of the world to stop them. While I hate what they have done, I can see how they got there, the memory of the Nazis must create a feeling that they cant be victims again, years of missile attacks from neighbours and Oct 7th*, a perfect storm led them to what they did.....thats why it was for the rest of the world to say no.....but we didnt we stayed mostly silent, provided weapons and let them carry on.....I can see why it is THE issue for some people. I know people say there are atroctites everywhere.....but I dont think we are enabling the, in the same way.
(*equally I can see why Israel has been targeted)

So I will say it. I find it utterly fucking ridiculous we have imported an argument from 1000s of miles away in the middle east to the point where it massively impacts our politics.
If you dont condemn one side or the other you are X or Y.
Zionist!
Antisemite!
Racist!
Terrorist!
And on and on and on
Its farcical.
I find the rise in antisemitism in the UK disgusting as I am sure everyone does.
I find the rise of racism towards none whites disgusting as I am sure everyone does.
But I think Importing the arguments of others to the level we have, utterly ridiculous, actual insanity.
We have our own concerns in tbe country without allowing Israel / Palestine to impact our politics so much and dominate as it has been doing
Economics, NHS, rising poverty, wealth gap, disillusioned youth, petty crime rate, incoming increases in unemployment, etc etc etc, the list goes on.
Col you .. Blah blah blah.
Honestly. As a collective the UK needs to get a grip.
We wont fix domestic issues by dividing so vehement over who sides with who in the ongoing issues in the middle east.
Sadly the council elections seem to indicate I am pissing in the wind.

Is it more important than economic and domestic policy for many people?
BTW this is as good faith position from myself.

Trev is referencing the fact he was in Labour Friends of Israel and part of the antisemitism pile on against Corbyn (starting out neutral but becoming gradually more outspoken as he saw which way the wind was blowing). He has offered up a more critical stance on Israeli actions as Mayor but for a lot of left-leaning voters he is damaged goods. I doubt he’d be effective countering the Green surge because of that.

…I looked up his Wiki a wee while ago and found out that he lived in Culceth just across the East Lancs rd from Lowton where I lived - it’s where Jane Horrocks is from).
Then I saw he went to St Aelreds Secondary School in Newton Le Willows as I did! Small world!
