I would disagree slightly and say it was soft, but still a penalty.
You’re right in saying the foul on Maeda was a penalty too.
The whole thing is nuts. People making up conspiracies in their heads about fixtures this week too. That’s what happens when Celtic are in a tight race for the league, which I think has happened twice in the last 15 years.

Didn't think it was a peno in real-time, have seen enough pictures since to suggest why it was given. Honestly, the only thing I can say with absolute certainty is it's not the worst decision ever made either way. I did think there was a peno earlier in the game for a foul on Maeda, not given, there we go.
The point is - how much air-time was given afterward to the actual game itself, which was full of points of discussion? Sky just stick a microphone in front of Kris Boyd for ten minutes to lose his shit watching the peno reply on repeat.

OF fans are quite a special bunch, most online Celtic fans seem to be claiming that Celtic are now the victims here, that the reaction to that ludicrous decision is somehow evidence that the world is indeed against them and doesn't want them winning the league...despite a long list of recent debatable decision all going in their favour the last 4 weeks.
Its a cult that will here no criticism and jump through all sorts of logical "hoops" to defend themselves.

Da's in their front room/gardens, using all their science nous to get a ball bounced off them and showing how the trajectory could only have been caused by a hand/head. Some of these are ironic, some are not. Some of the comments are ironic, some are not. Five minutes into reading the unironic ones and you lose the will to live.

Does anyone else remember what it was like before VAR? i fucking do
VAR technology should be the best thing that's happened to the game. Just need competent people using it

I'm probably no different to most, I'd keep some minimally-invasive version of VAR that doesn't suck the life out of the immediacy of the game, if it's possible. If it's not, bin it.
But either way, the broadcasters will keep analysing every on-field decision within an inch of its life, farming anger for clicks. And fans will lap it all up while they lose their tiny minds on social media. The only difference will be whether a man in a box with a desktop and a headset is included in the paranoid ranting.
Honestly, fans these days are far fucking worse than anything officials are doing on the pitch or their monitors. There is less and less decent discourse about football now outside of endless, pointless, and mostly ill-informed jibberish about match decisions.
