They had tough games against Portugal, Hungary and Chechia none of whom would be regarded as weak teams. Coleman played in all matches and was one of the best players on the pitch. O’Brien played as one of three centre backs and was probably outshone by his two partners Collins and O’Shea.
I am not suggesting at all that he be given a new playing contract. In fact I totally agree that he shouldn’t get one but I am surprised that Moyes didn’t make use of him at all during the season based on his performances for Ireland up against some top class wingers.
He offers much more than O’Brien can going forward.

He was a place-holder on the bench, and Moyes 'eyes in the dressing room' (his words).
Ireland played him as they're shite and international footie is different.
We just decided to give him a farewell tour, which is fine, he deserves it.

But as MikeJ previously suggested, must've been a favour to keep him fit for Ireland after all he's done for us.
If that's the case, fair enough, but enough now.

Surely we can expect to hear a retirement announcement before the weekend? Because if not he’s either
- staying another year
- leaving but with no home send-off
- disappearing quietly out of the club.
I wonder if instead there could be some kind of preseason testimonial?
