I do think the money spent, last summer, is at the heart of the expectation gap. Put that aside for a moment (I’ll come back to it, I promise) and Moyes has really been playing this season with a starting eleven that includes the additions of Dewsbury-Hall and Grealish (out for half the season). Barry, you could argue, but he’s clearly behind Beto in our pecking order. So, to add half a point per game with just one and a half new additions…the man’s worked miracles.
NOW, where I think there’s a good question mark is on the use of last summer’s resources. We spent a LOT of money on players that the manager has barely used (Alcaraz, Aznou, Rohl, Dibling). If we include the Rohl fee you’re talking about roughly £80m there. If we’d spent that on a couple of full backs and a centre back, maybe another wide midfielder, then we could well have competed with the top four.
fwiw, I also think Moyes takes a more reactive approach to subs and changes in games. I’m not making a blind defence of his work. But bogus stats aren’t my start point for questioning his performance.

"Wtf, David. You've spent circa 100m points, used very little of those players except KDH and essentially the team have gone backwards? You want an extension AND more control?"
It's a tough sell.
