Pre-race Team-talk?
Heat of the moment decision, some work, some don't. I guess if you see a bike you take it. Perhaps Philipsen should have known as well(?)
In hindsight, it might have been wiser if they'd have just swapped front wheels.
Of course, it didn't help Van der Poel that he then had a 2nd puncture shortly afterwards.
Pogacar also had a near disastrous situation where he had a puncture on a long cobbled section, with no teammate or team-car nearby. In his case, he made a risky but wise decision to take a neutral Shimano bike. Massively gamble but it paid off. Of course he then had to stop again to get his on one of his Colnago bikes.
Brilliant race, which was made all the more interesting by Van der Poel never giving-up.
Over 2 mins down after his punctures and bike issues, he ended up only 15 secs down at the end. An incredible recovery as he wasn't towed by teammates but did the majority of the work himself.
Unfortunately, for Pogacar and possibly fortunately for the neutrals (and certain Danes), this race had no steep inclines for him to attack on.
Pleased for Wout van Aert though. 2nd 'Monument' win after his Milan-San Remo victory in 2020.

Nearly man finally got his big win.
Van der Poel would’ve been a contender had he not had his incident, but he has avoided bad luck three years in a row.
Did you enjoy it?
