I'd hope that football fans might appreciate the job we do in grassroots footy often without assistants and on pitches where you can hardly make out the markings yet we're expected to get every offside decision right, know when the ball is 1mm behind the goalline from 40 yards away when the ball is in the air and have eyes in the back of our head
VAR should be used for factual decisions only and not subjective ones

The FA and refereeing in particular is a massive tick box/face fits/meet targets exercise.
They’ve trained the SG1 (top level refs) to forensically examine the game via VAR and as such the refs have got worse, on pitch it’s relied on for major decisions.
Yes they are under major pressure and yes it’s a fucking really really difficult, mentally and physically demanding job, but they’ve completely fucked it in this country and it needs a massive reset and new approach so that in 5 years time the benefits of actually concentrating on being a good referee first and worry about VAR. later will show some benefit.
Unfortunately those coming through with any promise will have it drummed out of them by the current bollocks and those coming through will be the ones who have a face that fits.
Until then, almost every game will have a collection of baffling or shit decisions. VAR or not!
