You could also say that the foul was "off the ball".
I don't which rule VAR applied here but it seems weird to me. Very fortunate that it didn't affect the result.

That PGMOL watch guy funnily did something on this sort of thing earlier in the week, and how an offence which would be a DOGSO, but a goal is still scored, should be a yellow card not red as the denial bit doesn't happen. Only thing I can see that is at all different here is that Haaland subsequently fouled Szlobozai so he was denied the opportunity to deny a goal scoring opportunity.... completely bizarre and one I wish Poulson had had the guts to tell VAR to get lost.

And Haarland had clearly beaten Szoboszlai to the race for the ball and would have ensured it was a goal if he hadn't prevented been by Szoboszlai's foul.
IMO, they should have given the goal anyway.
Sets a ridiculous precedent.
