This may be why they didn't nobble the party to destroy him in 2016; Thirty years of extended Supreme Court domination presumably being an acceptable quid pro quo given the alternative would have been thirty years of Supreme Court subjugation.

It's not exactly glaring to me but I presume the party's old guard must have differed from the Democrats on at least some issues.
