He’d signed a low basic wage deal (I think it was like £6kpw) with high incentives for appearances. Once it was clear he wasn’t going to get game time that deal doesn’t make sense for him (or the club, who weren’t going to use him anyway) so a clean break suited both parties.
I don’t really rate him (and his best days are long behind him) but he’s no worse than Beto so if we got him on a free and sold Beto to e.g. fund a full back then we’re better off. Plus we can let Wilson go at the end of season rather than locking ourselves into anything longer-term. Far more sensible than e.g. a loan with commitment to buy someone else as we’ll have a clearer picture of where we’ll be and what market we’ll be playing in, this summer.
