Protestants versus Catholics. Sunnis versus Shias. Civil wars. Neighboring countries with almost identical cultures.
These wars are fought by zealots who understand that the closer the other lot is the bigger risk they are. It's easier to convert someone who's beliefs are already almost aligned.
Also, more to your point zealots are all pretty much the same, be it theological or ideological or something else. Some are more susceptible to it. I think that's a big difference between us Evertonians and that lot generally speaking. They have far more people I would classify zealots simply because of the way they behave. It's the absolute belief that our ideology is the only right way and anyone who disagrees is not just wrong but is being disrespectful and dangerous to the one true belief.
Some people just need enemies to hate.

The Tommy Robinson lot and small c conservative Muslims....Both up for capital punishment and generally tough law and order, both pretty homophobic, both not big on women's rights. Much more in common than they would have with me, the white guy they are protecting.
Same for Hamas and Israeli government, way more in common with each other than they have with the average Israeli or Palestinian.

I often think with these people, if it wasn't religion they would find another justification to slaughter their fellow humans.
To me, the philosophy is pretty simple - nobody has the right to take somebody else's life.
There are cases where it may be necessary (self defence, to prevent greater carnage) but fundamentally it is wrong and the reason I don't agree with the death penalty.
Obviously this is an absolute outrage, a horrible hate-fuelled crime but you're right to highlight the disparity with which the media covers antisemitic violence compared with the daily butchery of innocents in Gaza.
Telling that the initial comments from the Aussie PM are to call for greater gun control. When this shit happens in the States, the reaction is the polar opposite.

... and a 70 year old woman out shopping are amongst hundreds killed by the Israeli Defence Force in Gaza since the so called ceasefire came in. But hundreds or thousands of Palestinians being slaughtered is of little interest to Western media and the political class.

Mass murder in the name of religion again
Extremism has become common place sadly
