Look at what happened in the 2024 election. The Democrats at state and national level went out of their way to dissuade any competitive people from challenging Biden, and then those handful of people that tried to challenge him ran into ballot access challenges. Florida's democratic primary was restricted to one candidate - Joe Biden.
Then of course once Biden blew up, the machine gave people no choice and installed Kamala Harris as candidate despite (maybe because) when she last stood in a national primary in 2020 she was polling terribly with Democrats.
Look at the Irish Presidential election, where Fine Gael made sure that the local councils restricted the eligibility to three candidates.
And then in the UK both Labour and the Tories have centralised candidate selection and shortlists.
Depressing.

and the time was transparently right for someone entirely unwelcome at Davos (I was about to add "or Little St. James" - but uh, maybe not) - it took quite the bag of tricks from the Democrats to knacker an irascible Jewish socialist's run for the presidency during the same election.
The people had seen a parade of absolute gargoyles lie them into accelerating penury and powerlessness over the previous 40 years with no sign of reversing course and a dwindling interest in even hiding it anymore, who else would they have distrusted less?
