Primarily because our company reserved tables for us and guests, plus paid for the first 2 Maß and half a chicken. Although, unfortunately they stopped a while ago.
The prices are ridiculous but it's an enormous festival and doesn't come without it's costs. I guess the captive tourist audiences and those there for "die Gaudi" are willing to fork-out to be part of the event.
Now, I can go to our local drinks market and get what's called "Oktoberfestbier", albeit in bottles for €2.19 and €2.39, which corresponds to a price per litre of approximately €4.38 to €4.78.
Approx. €10 per litre less! But then I don't have the amazing atmosphere.
If you want to see how the Wiesn Maß prices have been climbing, check this out.

Apparently other people think so too, apparently for the first time ever they actually had to close the gates Saturday at six. We went on Friday so there was plenty of people but not too much.
Oide Wiesn (the traditional side) was more fun, recommend you go there even though it has a small (4€) entrance fee.
You also reprogram your idea what a beer is. Half a liter is now kids' size. Hacker-Pschorr was the best even though it looked like Augustiner was dominant.
