Rapidly developing countries are looking East for partnerships and advancements, not West. I genuinely think the concept of democracy and majority governments that have the potential to change every 4-5 years prevent Western countries from having long-term visions that they can actually advance. Governments are too scared of losing votes to pursue long-term fundamental change.

If you look at what they UK is best in the world at, I'd say the Premier League, Higher Education (but that's in trouble) and Banking. Maybe live music. In 10 years I suspect that will be down to 1 or 2.

You're spot on about being left behind/being held back through fear of upsetting the civil liberty crowd. Nailed on they'll be the ones cryarsing the loudest when they realise the UK is actually viewed as backward in a quarter of a century (or less)

Our mutual friend is always gushing how far ahead even places like Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan is in embracing the new tech available should be a wake up call for a lot of supposedly developed nations.
