When you’re away at The Shite (or another Top 8ish team), then it’s fair enough (though you can’t do that and be as passive as we were on Saturday). It’s sensible tactics to try and block/occupy the space your opposition forwards/creators want to play in - particularly when those forwards/creators are £80M+ players.
But when you’re chasing the game or playing garbage like Wolves, then swapping one of those defensive midfielders for a more creative player who can support the striker and offer a forward pass option for N’Diaye and Grealish, might be quite a good idea.

Hear me out.
First of all I know we had a budget and we’re not going to attract/sign a raft of prolific players.
Of the 9 players we’ve signed, only 2 have gone straight into the starting XI namely Grealish and KDH. Both good footballers and help us on the ball undoubtedly but neither of them add goals.
Of the other 7 (goalies aside) I’d argue that none of the others do either other than they may have the potential to do so if afforded plenty of time on the pitch in future.
Last night showed a combo of them being not ready/fans not having patience for them to gain that experience.
Barry and Dibling are nowhere near first team ready IMO. It’s not his fault (Barry) but it’s going to painful watching him and Beto being swapped continually when neither provide the answer to being reliable goal threats/scorers.
Goals are not just on the centre forwards though.
This team overall just doesn’t score goals. The numbers prove that.
It has 2 fullbacks that offer zero attacking threat, and 2 midfielders in Garner and Gana that offer next to nothing attack wise for 99% of the time.
All goal scoring and creativity then is completely 100% on Beto, Barry, Ndiaye, Grealish and KDH. That’s not getting us near top half IMO.
To finish top half you’ve got to be averaging 1.5 goals a game thereabouts nevermind what else it would take to finish 7th.
We’ve played 7 games this season. Scored 8 goals and conceded 7. Still that approx 1 goal a game average which gets you approx 40 points there or thereabouts. Yes I know it’s early days again.
Not being negative just a realist.
I hear a lot about “We’re playing well, we’re controlling games better” etc.
All great and it’s been nice on the eye at times but if it’s not converted into goals then ultimately the final outcome doesn’t change. I know we’re having to start again with a whole raft of new players hence also why it’s unfair to expect it to gel overnight hence also why I don’t have top half expectations at all.
Again the season is just getting going and there are some teams you’d expect to have scored more possibly and it’s all about opinions on each teams goal capability/threat
Longer term across the season.
Moyes IMO has his hands full again working with a squad this season that over time just doesn’t score comparatively to most of the rest of the league.
I hope him and his coaches can help solve it somehow but significant £ is still required on more proven quality before we’re fully settled and secure back as a top half side again in future seasons IMO.

I might actually revise my prediction up to 7th
I think it's clear what our weakness defensively is. I think that will be remedied in a couple of weeks. Saying that, we kept Liverpool to less than 1 XG at their place.
We'll score goals. I'd be concerned if we weren't creating chances or getting shots away.

the biggest disappointment for me was that none of the players that came in really stepped up and gave Moyes either a decision to make or at least give some comfort in regards to squad depth.
McNeil, wtf has happened to him. That was shocking
What was even more shocking was that Alcaraz came off before him and Tim. WTF was that about. At least Alcaraz offered something.
Dybling was far too passive. This should've been the game that he laid down a marker and show what he can offer. There was verty little of that. He only carried the ball and dribbled when he was absolutely forced to. Scared of giving the ball away? maybe. But that flys in the face of his welcome videos when he kept banging on about being brave. Far too passive
I'm glad Moyes made the changes. These lads need to play and the hope was at least one or two of them would put their hands up and give Moyes food for thought. Just didn't happen.
And saying that. Why the fuck didn't Moyes give Aznou a start? Not having a go at Seamus, i thought he did ok considering. But lets at least have a look at the new left back. What does playing an aging right at left back achieve. Really poor from Moyes there.
It was such an Everton league cup performance. Different managers, different players, different opposition, same old shite.
Even James Garner who i thought was the best player on the pitch. Let himself down badly for their second goal.
