Putin didn't directly take control of the main media outlets. Instead his trusted oligarch allies bought them, TV in particular. Any those they couldn't buy were harassed by the authorities, many had to close down.

What's going on in USA? Why, Ellison bought Paramount Skydance (who owns CBS) and seems to buying WB (who owns CNN). Rest can be coerced by threatening to take regulatory action against ABC and Disney if they don't cancel Kimmel. And it's so, so obvious that when it worked once they will not stop there. My guess is they will start doing this for smaller and smaller things until media starts regulating themselves. No more critique of Trump or his government.

They don't have to own everything outright, it took Putin a long time to basically silence almost all independent news media but it doesn't matter. They only need to control the big corpos.
