Zuckerberg at al are making bazillions getting you riled up and having you dislike your friends and where you live. There's still plenty of decent people out there who aren't fighting on the internet, but social media is designed to get you and your friends to see stuff that makes you all upset or angry with each other.
A few weeks of autumn walks in the fresh air, going out picking blackberries, painting, fishing or whatever and England won't seem so bad.
Don't let Zuckerberg win.

England and the US are both particularly susceptible to grifters who rely on the patriotism card and there is this sense of superiority to other countries because of each country's history in part, I suppose. That's a generalisation, I know, but I think there's some truth in it.
I don't see how what I posted is the same thing in reverse, does it come across that I think it's only England that has problems? Because I know that isn't the case. The rise of nationalism and the far right is a global thing.
Been pondering emigrating for some time and this is only one or the reasons for it. The economy and weather felt further up the list before. Like I said, I don't expect it to be a bed or roses anywhere else but countries like Spain and Portugal look like more attractive options at the moment.

France an absolute mess, right wing government very likely. Germany AFD about to win another goal election. Even scandi countries populist parties are getting more traction. Canada would have gone populist if Trump hadn't inadvertently changed that. The populist, macho alt right culture is everywhere, particularly among young men.

united by bigotry, fair warms the cockles of your heart eh?
Out of interest, do you feel Ireland is headed down the same route - whether it would be a better place to live than England is what I'm wondering. Certainly somewhere I'd consider moving to. Can't escape problems wherever you go I guess, I just think the UK in particular is rapidly turning into an especially unpleasant place to live.

in the form of badly-erected flags being cable tied to lampposts by hotel shouters and roundabout painters, the sight of that grifting little thug Yaxley-Lennon alongside Hatey Katie at the match in London yesterday was too much to bear. I am doing a social media detox now (obvs this place doesn't count), I'm sick of seeing that kind of shite on my feed (been a bit of an eye-opener as to what some of my "friends" really think) and it's bad for mental health generally I think.
Can't ignore what's going on in the world but having constant reminders of how shit things are getting is draining.
I notice the march had no clearly defined message (other than Starmer being a wanker, which is hard to disagree with) - this seems a little odd at first until you realise the organisers want to draw from as large a pool as possible, so I don't think all 100k+ of the marchers were necessarily hardcore racists - but a significant proportion were, and their aim is to suck in others who may be basically decent (if maybe slightly ignorant) on issues like immigration, plummeting living standards and government incompetence/corruption. It's a short step then to join the dots from (correctly) pointing out that immigration has rocketed - ironically in large part due to Brexit and the Johnson government's policies aimed at ameliorating the exodus of EU citizens - the asylum system is broken and that life is getting worse for most of us to a position of scapegoating migrants, aider and abetted by "do gooder lefty lawyers who hate Britain". It's a very easy connection to make in peoples' minds and if the lines between refugees, legal and illegal migrants can be blurred, so much the better. Once that's done, it's only a short hop over to white replacement conspiracy theories.
It's genuinely disturbing me and I can't see any scenario in which things improve in the short term. Just the opposite.
At home we're talking about emigrating and starting to put plans in place. I still have some convincing to do with the other half and I know it would be a big upheaval but I genuinely fear for my children's futures growing up in this version of the UK. For a number of reasons. Not that life would be a bed of roses elsewhere but there are significant and deep rooted problems in this country now. To me it feels significantly worse than at any other time in my lifetime in many ways, and the trajectory is downwards - I'd love to believe that this is an overly pessimistic take but I think it's the reality.

…but didn’t deserve to be murdered the way he was. I saw a few headlines about the marches in London where he is now being hailed as a Martyr. In Britain? It saddens me deeply that this projection of a hate filled agenda is so visible on English streets (trust me, we have them in Ireland too. I saw Irish far right wearing union jacks in marches in Dublin - for any Irish person my age, *that* is just beyond comprehension. I think most Irish people respect the cross of St George but the Union Jack is a dog whistle for imperialism and perceived racism not just in Ireland but across most of the world. The politicising of flags now is another new low. It’s become the latest tool for weaponising far right support everywhere (for some context, I’m from down the East Lancs road originally and have both GB and Irish passports).
The world is lost. I saw elderly anti far right marchers getting arrested for wearing or having pro Palestine/ anti genocide signs / clothing etc.
I could scream in frustration about why governments are giving that f****g toad in Israel a free run at the genocide he’s implemented and the lack of any restraints shown. EU states saying they would recognize a Palestinian state (firstly it too WAY too long for that to happen) and then be called anti semetic, terrorist supporting etc as if it’s a bad thing??
There is no path to any healing out there at the moment. It’s not a causal extrapolation to think that there’ll be a broader war with Russia within Europe soon, and that China will take Taiwan at some point.
It’s like we’re living in a f****g dystopian movie and the end of days is not far away. It’s so so depressing. Greed, hate, horrible militarism of religious code, I’m truly embarrassed to be a white male, it’s where the majority of the horror in the world originates from.
Sorry, went on one there

despite it looking very much like the Charlie Kirk killer's politics are on the extreme right, Trump says he "couldn't care less" about uniting the country and puts the blame for everything on the "radical left" who want "transgender for everyone" while the far right are motivated by nothing more than a desire to stop crime. Isn't crime terrible? Next thing, these crazy leftists will be trying to elect a President with criminal convictions and making out that's completely normal, oh, hang on...
Basically trying to use an assassination as fuel for more divisive hatemongering to distract from any more awkward questions about Epstein.
What a hateful, fucked-up piece of shit he is.
