when Starmer was Brexit minister - a new customs union with the EU, effectively a soft Brexit.
The path to such an outcome was far easier than going down the road of campaigning for a second referendum, there was never any realistic chance of this happening and all it did was leave them wide open to accusations of "not respecting democracy"
People on the Remain side gave Corbyn a lot of shit for not getting on the "people's vote" bandwagon but he was between a rock and a hard place. I think the number of votes they lost in Leave-voting areas on that policy shift alone in the run up to the 2019 GE was underestimated.
