With asylum seekers. Two very different issues with different solutions. We want migration, its good for the country and the world, but 800k a year for the uk is way too high. But we have the same thing as brexit, i.e the public being lied to about the solutions, we can't have an honest debate. Drastically reducing the number has major consequences, like you say for public services, inflation etc.

As I understand it, there were processing centres in Calais (pre-Brexit), and far less trouble / numbers. Since it's become a cause celebre, there's no way the media-fuelled right would allow that, even if it helped.
But the whole thing is now fucked. The NHS needs foreign nurses, but they can't bring their families? It's mental. As a nation, we seem intent on self-sabotage.

But provided we agree a sensible number of asylum visas via legal routes, I think we need them.
If the left are right safe and legal routes will stop the boats so they won't be needed.

I am very much pro migration, but the situation with the boats need fixing, I know its overblown, I know the numbers are not huge, but that method of arriving isnt good for anyone.
I think we need to say we will take.....I dont know, 50k asylum seekers a year via safe and legal routes. That will not stop the boats, its the answer the left always give, but unless you plan to offer unlimited places via safe and legal routes and process it all quickly, people will still come on boats.
We need to say nobody arriving on a boat can make an asylum claim, I think you have to hold them secuirly in someting like a camp until they can be returned...somewhere.
That surely stops the flow, the only reson to arrive on a boat would be to disapear and work illegally, most folk dont want to live like that.
Im sure some people dont see the asylim seekers temselves as a problem, fair enough, but we live in a democracy, and if we dont fix this we end up woth Farage as PM.
