But the implication is that if he was stood side on and it hit his upper arm it would still be a penalty, and that seems ridiculous.

They talk about “he leaned in”…of course he did, you are allowed to try to block any ball. His arm couldn’t be much closer to the ball. In my opinion it was great defending and a great block.
