Differentation could come from building the data models to specifically look for best fits for this. If I was doing the software I'd try to develop some sort match value, could be from 1 to 5, a percentage, what ever works best. There are probably hundreds of parameters available for a model. Developing this model would probably cost from half a million to million quid. Updating is much cheaper and obviously only needs to be done twice a year. Even though it sounds expensive it's peanuts if club makes one good signing or avoids a bad one.
Then search for a player for a certain role and sort by this value. Pick the top, say, five candidates plus couple down the list that someone in footballing side thinks could be an option. Have people analyze these players and see how it all matches up. Refine the model like this. Eventually club should have a pretty decent tool to quickly search for potential players which hopefully unearths suitable ones no-one thought about and are available to us. Again, Brighton is good at finding this type of players, but I have no idea how they use the data.
And not only does it point to potential signings, it might also flag players club is interested as potentially not being a good fit. This would at least lead to more scrutiny.
This would be useful simply because there are several thousand players good enough to play in the PL, at least if given the right role. PL itself has around 500 players plus most of the players in the other four major leagues, plus many players in the next tier, less so in tier three leagues but some etc. So it's impossible to go through all of them at this detail.
Data is just data. It's what you do with that defines its worth. It would be interesting to know how far clubs are with it, probably all that I just wrote is done by most if not all big clubs already. Sounds like a lot of time has been figuring out what we can afford, how much we think player X is worth, negotiating with their club, getting the nod to speak to the player and then finding out they are not remotely interested. Fine, these things happen but if the number of rejections is coming as a surprise then we need to get a bit more savvy in our approach instead of blaming the targets for not "buying into Everton".
Be ambitious by all means, we want to be pursuing the real quality, but you would hope pragmatism and moving down the target list in a reasonable time frame would also come into it. Previous Message
Says we are trying hard but sign players but many of the ones he wants have a preference to play for teams in Europe so a lot are saying no.
Mentioned he is keeping an eye on Championship market too.
Is ensuring the team are super fit to compensate for lack of quality. Says they are already used to training hard because of previous regime (one for the ultra Dyche haters there).
Says the grass at the new ground is currently too dense making it a slow pitch. Has told them they need to fix it ahead of the new season.
