I was sitting next to him at a charity fundraiser about twenty years or so ago, and for all his image of confidence and "front", he was shaking like a leaf at the prospect of giving an after-dinner-style speech. He needn't have worried, he was excellent, But the first thing that he did when he sat down after speaking was to turn to me with a genuinely concerned expression on his face and ask "was I OK?"
If I'd have been blessed with the right level of footballing skills, I can't imagine that my tribal leanings would ever have allowed me to have signed for Liverpool if they'd have come in for me. So I asked Joey later in the evening whether he'd have signed for Everton if we'd have gone in for him.Joey's response to my question, delivered with an incredulous expression on his face; "yeah...?"
