because they tend to lack empathy and assume that everyone is as motivated purely by self-interest as they are. Altruism to them is a completely alien concept, and they are at best deeply suspicious of anybody who displays it. Hence the sniping and sneering, accusations of hypocrisy, "virtue signalling" etc. They can't think of any possible reason for getting involved other than to "resuscitate artists on life support". Yeah, the careers of Queen, Bowie, U2, Phil Collins, Madonna, Sting etc were really on life support in the mid 80s as they sold out stadiums worldwide and strung together hit after hit after hit. Horseshit of the highest order.
Of course people like Bono who swan around in private jets whilst championing environmental causes are annoying but the right seem to enjoy playing a bizarre game of their own invention in which you are not allowed to care about or do anything for the greater good unless you have led a completely blameless life. So musicians must give away all of their money to charity and live in poverty before they are allowed to encourage others to perhaps think about donating or taking positive action to help the less fortunate. If they do not do this then they can be contemptuously dismissed as a hypocrite/do-gooder/"champagne socialist". Previous Message
It was the Thatcher/Reaganomics era. For a lot of people in their teens and twenties Live Aid was political as well as charitable. A message that we did believe in society and on a global scale. As a concert it was a curate’s egg. As a charity the UK was cleaner than the USA. As a statement it paved the way for the Blair/Clinton era for good or ill. Quite a few future Labour MPs were in the crowd that day. These days their fresh faced ambitious counterparts would be demanding the police break it up due to noise, drugs etc. Previous Message
I don't see what was so terrible about it to be honest.
Bob Geldof a bit of an irritant, "give us your focking money" etc, but heart in the right place, I think. Previous Message
