His older brother, Phil, was a friend at university. During a spring vacation Phil invited ne to spend a weekend at his family's house in Rishton. On the Saturday morning we went to Martin's game for Royal Clitheroe Grammar School. He played center forward and scored four or five goals, the best player on the pitch by a mile.

After moving to the U.S. in 1969 I heard about Martin's professional career through Phil. I was excited about his move to Everton, but family responsibilities here kept me from visiting my relatives on Merseyside in the late 1980s. And even though I visited Phil and his family during subsequent trips to the U.K. Martin and I never crossed paths again.
