the last bit is maybe changing - there's some limited reasoning capability in newer models that might be pretty decent in time, but we're a long way off a general intelligence.
however, what it is capable of won't stop them replacing humans. they are already stealing content to train it, and it can't be creative itself so all it'll do is reduce the incentive for new creators.
things like machine learning are hugely powerful and have already made many advances possible in medicine and science.
personally, i've used it for coding and it's a bit like a junior developer who thinks they're awesome but you need to double check everything that they deliver because it gets things badly wrong quite often or makes mistakes. the issue is that you need experience to tell when they do that, and if ai replaces humans then there won't be anyone capable of doing that before long.
personally, i think what we have is a vastly overrated copyright thief with some very specific utility that's being heavily marketed because no one is willing to admit that they've sunk billions into something flaky and environmentally damaging.
