I think it’s much more likely we buy a new left sided defender who can cover for Mykolenko if necessary and ideally mitigate the risk of Branthwaite being sold sometime in the next couple of years. Other than that, I image the priorities are strikers, right sided midfielders and back ups for Gana and Pickford Previous Message
Also I think his footballing ability is quite limited and he managed to hit the heights he did thanks to his blistering pace. No disrespect to him for that, but now that pace is slowing down he hasn’t got the ability to keep going at the top level.
Compare to someone like Thiago Silva who left the premier league at 40 looking like he could be a in a title winning side. Previous Message
... none of those three signings address the lack of pace issue, which is absolutely paramount.
Signing Walker would have gone some way to addressing it a few years ago, but not so much now.
Personally, I'd be happy with Walker on a free, if his signing was accompanied by, for example: Habib Diarra (central midfield), Doak (pacey winger), Grealish on loan (versatile box of tricks), and that lad, Woltemade, up front (looks a hell of a prospect).
All of the above is not enough in terms of numbers, but it would be a meaningful start. Beyond that, I'd expect Moyes to make good use of the loan market for another season, and maybe bring in one or two young permanent signings (prospects that can develop with us) or the odd well-priced veteran to flesh things out. if we'd signed a young forward for 35mil and a right winger for another 30mil and brought in another midfielder, then Walker signing would be met with either positivity or the odd shrug
if however he is the first signing of the summer (ok Alcaraz but dont get fussy) then the response is going to be at best a shrug of the shoulders and mostly a case of wtf...
The problem is we've had almost 2 decades of 'wait and see how things look when the window closes' and in the majority of those 20 years, things have looked shit
I think he is past it, I genuinely dont think he is better than Ashley Young, but lets see if he does arrive and who else
Grealish McAtee and Walker wouldnt be objectionable
