He’s often sub-par but scores just about enough goals to remain semi-relevant. Kind of like how Graeme Hick would have three or four meh tests and then hit a fantastic century, keeping him in the squad for another four tests.
He’s not going to get better and would cost too much to keep (especially as he wants a pay rise), so it’s better that we move on. Improve and save money.
He’ll get a good deal somewhere - either with a newly promoted club or in the Middle East - and, at this stage of his career, he’s not going to join a team that’s challenging for real honours so absolutely has to be taking care of his bank balance.
He did a job, scored some important goals, was a likeable guy. But it’s the right decision all round.
