Only listen to the preface about Barlinnie, so will reserve judgement, except on one thing. I can understand why he or his publishers wanted Dunc to narrate his autobiography, but he is predictably wooden. You can almost hear the spaces between the words. Please don't infer that I am saying he is stupid – he isn't. Having listened to a lot of books (and partially sighted), it's almost always a mistake for authors to narrate their own stuff – they haven't got the skill set. An exception was Pat Nevin, who was pretty good, but he is a professional communicator. Previous Message
I read it on and off over the past couple of days. It’s very interesting for Evertonians, lots on insights behind the scenes etc.
I know he didn’t write it (Henry Winter did) but I’m struggling a bit with the sometimes distinct lack of modesty at times. Would Everton fans gone mental if he hadn’t been put on the bench as backroom staff, coaching etc. the self aggrandisement really grates at times. While it may very true about his generosities I’m not sure virtue signalling about them all is the way to go. A more subtle comment about the broader efforts might have been better.
I got a sense that the one way rhetoric here might very well be challenged if there were other perspectives provided, particularly from the folks who Duncan posits as (in effect) not knowing what they were talking about, while he did. Always.
Interesting things I didn’t know about were the financial situations, and his youth, and associated escapades, in Stirling. The stories of the burglaries are hilarious. I’ll never look at anyone’s eyebrow piercing again without wincing.
Anyway! I’ll love that man until I die. I’ll judge him by his passion on and off the pitch for Everton.
I’ve just been gifted the Audible version as told by the man himself, maybe different verbal inflections might level the playing field so-to-speak
Chris
