"Roughly speaking a country mile is 10 furlongs (2200 yards) whereas a mile is 8 furlongs (1760 yards). The country mile is also called the Old English Mile, and the present mile has been called the Statute Mile or London Mile. Formerly the definition of a mile varied around the counties."
