I thought it was a good interview, and although I love the bloke to bits and have some great memories of his time with us, it's hard to ignore what seems to have been - at best - a lack of self-discipline and - at worst - an unprofessional attitude towards the game and his career. I believe that Southall has told him that he is the the biggest waste of talent he's ever seen, based on his ability and what he could have achieved, which is pretty damning. As with Southall though, he seems like a thoroughly decent human being, which I think is far more important than how well they played football.
Other highlights of the interview were Ian Wright talking fondly about Everton fans (and not just the amount of goals he scored against us!) - he's definitely one of my favourite ever non-Everton players. Previous Message
maybe I imagined it but I’m sure he said Howard Kendall when he meant Howard Wilkinson, and referred to Gough as the Everton captain even though he was talking about being at Rangers. Shows how much we are on his mind.
Also interesting how, at the end, Roy Keane said he was being too hard on himself and shouldn’t think of regrets, whereas Dunc was being very self critical. I’d have loved them to go into more detail but it did seem a big difference in attitude. Keane being stubborn and defensive, Ferguson being much more reflective and humble.
I hadn’t realised he was the youngest player at the Euros and had Leeds/Chelsea after him earlier in his career. I’m just glad his end of career cameos that got us into Europe happened so that there was a little bit of a happy ending. But hard not to think what could have been, if he hadn’t been injured so much, and took care of himself more. Previous Message
Duncan will forever be one of my heroes and I loved every bit of the interview. He seems like a wonderful person!
When he talked about being a manager and they had too many draws, he said they needed a striker. Same situation as us - too many draws. So I say it again; our main target next season should be a quality striker.
Of all the Everton players, Duncan Ferguson would be the person I would choose to have a pint with.
