I have watched the development from a far. As a resident of the Wirral I’ve periodically taken a walk along the river front opposite the stadium and watched the progress. In recent weeks I’ve driven past the ground and been wowed. But finally getting inside the gate and inside the ground was as my 9 year correctly stated, ‘an unforgettable experience’
We arrived into the city centre via train and walked from James Dt station to the stadium which took around 25 minutes. The walk was very enjoyable taking in an area of the city I’m not overly familiar with, taking in Princes Dock, the new Isle of Man Ferry Terminal and seeing the various bars that currently exist on the approach which will no doubt increase between now and August and in the years to come as the area continues to regenerate. Anyone with half a vision will recognise the stadium will act as a catalyst to completely transform this part of town.
The fan plaza is vast and will be a great pre match rendez vous point for supporters with food and drink outlets and live music.
The ground itself is stunning and will only get better in the sense that it feels like a new show house that needs the personal touches to make it home. The Everton livery, the 1878’s working their magic on matchdays etc etc Today felt like a trip to the theatre but the atmosphere when it’s full and the crowd are up will be spine tingling.
My overall experience surpassed expectations. The small gripes I have heard are just that and will be ironed out. The concourses possibly did feel chaotic today but that’s because everyone wanted to experience them. Peoples matchday routines do and will all differ in time and will naturally change the flows of people in a positive way. Dispersal of fans may be a challenge but again, it will be figured out.
I do understand the concerns around transport but it will improve and evolve over time I’m sure.
But back to my original point, hopefully the stadium which is ‘the best’ will be the catalyst for delivering ‘the best’ team in time. With the new ownership looking like they mean business, we could be in for a fun ride.
I’ve not been looking forward to leaving Goodison but todays experience more then softens the blow.
