Think he had cartilage problems in his knees needing surgeries.
That said, I suspect Kendall just though Dave Watson was a better defender and so when he had the chance to get him just did it, and wasn't sentimental.
Just like when he brought in Lineker to replace Andy Gray.

I remember him scoring loads of goals for us, but also picking up injuries a lot.
As a kid it always seemed harsh how he was effectively binned off for Dave Watson.
Watson did boss obviously, but was Mountfield binned mostly due to injury record?
