As for the time period, during your period Vietnam War, Watergate, human rights and all that was very much on the cards. Fifties, if you were a white heterosexual male seems like an ideal time. Everyone had jobs and they paid so well you could buy a house and a big car. Life was simple.
Of course that's not entirely true but nostalgia never is.
