Point was more that they do not really care for the minorities. That whole anti-woke thing proves it. They don't want minorities to have more rights.

As for the time period, during your period Vietnam War, Watergate, human rights and all that was very much on the cards. Fifties, if you were a white heterosexual male seems like an ideal time. Everyone had jobs and they paid so well you could buy a house and a big car. Life was simple.

Of course that's not entirely true but nostalgia never is.
