The Maupay deal baffled most of us. Still does.

But I heard the story, quite soon after he'd signed, that Everton had initially approached Brighton to buy Welbeck and they turned us down as our valuation was too low - but told us we could have Maupay for the amount offered.

For me, I think Welbeck would have been a successful signing and one that I can see Thelwell being interested in. I just can't see him opting for Maupay at any point, so maybe somebody else intervened?

It's not the first time our transfer dealings have been detrimentally meddled with.
